We are delighted and very proud to share with you that Micah in Y5 has been chosen as one of the final 12 candidates for Leeds Children’s Mayor! The Leeds Children’s Mayor project is something that Year 5 enter every year with the support of Mrs Coates. Micah’s entry was chosen to represent the school and was then selected by the Lord Mayor and her advisors to go through to the final ballot. Children from Y2 upwards will be voting at school on Wednesday but anyone under 18 can vote so children in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 can use the QR code to do this – and can share with their family and friends to help Micah become this year’s Children’s Lord Mayor! You can see Micah’s brilliant entry and the QR code for how to vote below. Voting opens on July 19th.
Here are a few of Micah’s great ideas, which he focused on improving well-being and mental health support for young people in Leeds:
- Make more youth groups where people can just relax and talk to others like them. It is a lot easier to share feelings this way, since people might be struggling and no one knows.
- Train parents to help their children when they are struggling with their mental health. This could be done by having meetings run by people who understand mental health, like a counselor, and leaflets with helpful information. It would be good for parents to practice looking after their own mental health too.
- Make designated areas for children to exercise without being at risk, and have equipment provided for this, e.g. bicycles, roller skates/blades, skateboards. When they do this, it could be outside in nature too, as this make people feel better and thankful.
