Extra-curricular Music

Music plays an important part in the school curriculum. The scheme of work gives opportunities for listening, composing and performing through both instrumental work and voice. All children have weekly music lessons and are encouraged to become enthusiastic, confident, creative musicians. Children are also encouraged to take part in the many extra-curricular musical activities such as instrumental lessons and orchestra.

St Oswald’s provides instrumental lessons during school hours. Places are issued on a first come first served basis. In the event that tuition groups become full, your child will be placed on a waiting list.

We currently offer:

Group Lessons

As lessons occur within school time, it is therefore likely that children will miss a small portion of class lesson time (approximately 15-30 mins).

Our guitar lessons are provided by Get Into Guitar. Their model is built on fostering extremely positivity relationships and delivering expertly crafted lessons that really motivate children to practise hard. They recently won Music Tuition Business of the Year at the Yorkshire Prestige Awards 23/24. Get Into Guitar offer:

  • In lesson provision of suitably sized acoustic and electric guitars, headphones, headphone amplifiers, online tablet/laptop based learning and differentiated music resources.
  • A carefully crafted music curriculum including performances, competitions with great prizes, song writing and Battle of the Band video recordings.

These fun, collaborative groups are designed both for complete beginners, and those who already have some guitar experience. We meet every week for 30 minutes (Year 2-6). The cost is £5 per lesson paid in half termly blocks (eg. a 6 lesson half term with 1 free trial = £25). We also provide a strap fitting, restringing and repair service for those students looking to restore their own guitar.

The first lesson for all students will be a free trial lesson to see if it’s something they wish to pursue. If your child feels inspired to get involved and try it out then please sign up. We foster extremely positive relationships with our students, and aim to truly inspire them, building their confidence, aspirations and love of playing music.

We are providing the children with the opportunity to learn a musical instrument in partnership with the Music for Schools Foundation, a non-profit making charity that provide small group lessons on Recorder, Clarinet, Flute, Trumpet, Cornet and Saxophone.

The tutors make lessons fun, and children who learn to play a musical instrument also perform better in Maths, English and Science. There are social, emotional and developmental benefits too, such as improved memory, patience, perseverance and self-confidence.

Your child can learn to play for the equivalent of less than £1 per day and you can choose an instrument package that includes an instrument, music book, music stand, book bag and instrument maintenance cover, or if you already have an instrument you can just pay for lessons. There are reductions for children eligible for Pupil Premium.

To enrol for lessons visit www.mfsf.org.uk and click on ‘Enrol’ or for more information register your details at www.mfsf.org.uk/interested.

If your child receives free school meals, you may be entitled to free music tuition. However this bursary is not guaranteed and will need to be applied for by the school. If you would like to know more please email the school office for more details.
